How the IHTA got started......

The first informational meeting for this group was held by Wayne Mears and Agnes Wallace, gathering 32 horse people together who have interests in a support group for the Ionia State Recreation Area. Ionia along with Waterloo, are the two most used recreation areas in the state. With several issues of concern in the past between the horse people and the park staff, a support group was much needed and was welcomed by the park manager Ted Kessler, Communication and cooperation is what it takes from both parties. After much discussion, those in attendance agreed to start such a support group. Seventeen people volunteered to be on a Board of Directors and 532.00 was collected to start the organization.

On May 7,1998, those volunteering for the board met. Officers were elected and it was voted to name the group the IHTA. The Ionia Horse Trails Association. Committees were set-up for memberships, by-laws,work bees, and newsletter to get the group started and to get information out to over 110 people interested in becoming members. An emergency work bee was set for Sunday June 14, from 8:30 to noon, to clear, clean and trim trails damaged by the previous storm. Twelve adults and three children attended with tools in hand and met with Ted Kessler, Ted outlined what could be done to achieve the maximum results and the volunteers worked to make a big difference on one of the blocked trail loops.

On Wednesday June 17, 1998, from 6-9 PM. volunteers met to pick up and clear rocks, trim and clear more of the trails that needed to be brush-hogged before the July 4th weekend. Cheryl Schram, President of the IHTA, said this....

It's amazing how much can be accomplished by people dedicated to make a difference. That's what we are about. We cannot change what's happened in the past. But we can make a difference in the future= a future we will create through working and communication together as caretakers of the earth.

We hold true to the same values and dedication to this day......
